UP to Become a Leading State in Waste Management and Disposal Soon – Anuj Jha

Lucknow: A workshop under the Waste-to-Worth Technology Forum was organized at the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies in Uttar Pradesh. The event focused on solid waste management, wet waste management, source segregation, composting from plastic and organic waste, leachate treatment, and waste-to-energy solutions. Various companies presented their best practices and advanced technologies being implemented in other states for waste disposal and water management.

Making Uttar Pradesh Garbage-Free Using Technology

Presiding over the forum, Principal Secretary Amrit Abhijat emphasized that the primary goal of the workshop was to make Uttar Pradesh garbage-free through technology-driven methods. Around 40 companies participated in discussions on waste management and disposal techniques, sharing insights from other states to help UP enhance its waste management strategies. He also expressed gratitude to all participating companies and representatives, citing the successful waste disposal efforts at Prayagraj Mahakumbh, where approximately 1,500 tons of waste are being managed daily.

Addressing the stakeholders, Secretary Anuj Kumar Jha highlighted the significant progress made in legacy waste disposal across the state. Out of 86 legacy sites, 58 have been transformed into parks and Miyawaki forests, while 22 sites are under processing, and tendering is underway for 2 more sites.

Jha further stated that 103.65 metric tons of legacy waste have been processed, and 40,185 twin bins have been installed across the state. Additionally, 70,000+ community/public toilets and 900,000+ individual toilets have been built. Other significant developments include:

  • 750 MRF plants and 25 MSW plants established
  • 899 compost pits set up
  • 5 Waste-to-Energy (WTE) and Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste plants operational
  • 3 new tenders approved, and 18 UWM plants to be tendered soon

Discussing WTE and CBG (Compressed Biogas) plants, Jha noted that UP currently has a 600 TPD WTE plant in operation, with 3,150 TPD plants under construction in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Agra, Aligarh, Muzaffarnagar, and Meerut. Additionally, five 1,700 TPD CBG plants are under construction in Lucknow, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, and Kanpur. Future plans include establishing 1,150 TPD CBG and 2,650 TPD WTE plants.

Participation and Key Officials

The workshop saw participation from senior officials, including Additional Director Ritu Suhas, Additional Director (P/K) Dr. Aslam Ansari, Deputy Director Vijeta, Chief Engineer Kamaljeet Singh, and Assistant Engineer Shivam Singh. Representatives from 40 municipal bodies, municipal health officers, chief engineers, and sanitation inspectors were also present.

This initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable waste management and environmental conservation in Uttar Pradesh, positioning the state as a leader in technology-driven waste disposal solutions.
